5 Easy Tips to Make Your Carpet Last

On our blog, we talk a lot making the right purchases for flooring based on your families needs, budget and style.  Today we want to talk specifically on the carpet in your home and daily, monthly, and annual steps you can take to make your carpet last.  According to the Huffington Post, “carpets get replaced on average every seven years.”  We want you to get the most out of your investment and that’s why we gathered 5 tips that’ll make your carpet last!

1. Annual carpet cleaning with AmeriClean.

If your carpet is brand new and you purchased a carpet warranty (check out our blog on Carpet Warranties here), you are most likely required to have your carpets professionally cleaned every 18-24 months.  A professional cleaning from AmeriClean will be done using our hot water extraction method, which removes more soil and more types of spills than other methods.  We can work with your specific needs and concerns with your carpet and leave it looking new.

2. Spot clean as spills occur

Spot cleaning is so important in protecting the overall appearance of your carpet old or new.  Spot cleaning as spills occur helps to stop the spills from becoming stains by oxidizing into the carpet fibers.  When cleaning a spill always remember to use a clean white cloth and blot- not scrub, the spill to remove.  Stay tuned for a free copy of AmeriClean’s Ebook “The Ultimate Spot Cleaning Guide” for cleaning up the top 10 most common household spills.

3. Vacuum

Vacuuming is one of the best things you can do to maintain the appearance of your carpet.  We think so highly of vacuuming, we wrote an entire blog about it called Vacuuming 101.  Some spotlights from the blog include:

-Vacuuming should take place 2-3 times a week for an active family or a pet friendly house and 1-2 times a week for a smaller family or a home without pets

-High traffic areas in the room should be vacuumed 4-6 passes in various directions

-Low traffic areas in the room should be vacuumed 2-3 passes in various directions

4. Keep the dirt where it belongs

Entry mats are a life savor when it comes to tip number 4.  If you’re going to wear shoes within your house, make sure to wipe your feet as you enter the home to help get whatever is left behind on the soles off before walking throughout your home.  According to the Huffington Post, “it takes up to 17 steps before the soles of your shoes are clean” that’s a whole lot of steps considering the traffic patterns of your home.  Dirt (and whatever else you’ve collected throughout your walking) that is being tracked into the home will eventually settle down at the base of the carpet fibers and overtime wears down the carpet fibers.  This distorts the carpet fibers and overtime will affect the overall appearance of your carpet.

5. Rotate furniture

Once our furniture is set in our lovely home, little feet (and big ones too) walk and play all around the furniture creating what us pros call “traffic patterns.”  These traffic patterns cause wear and tear to your carpet by working dirt into the carpet pile and backing.  This is why in tip number 5, we recommend rotating your furniture if your room layout allows every 6 months.  In doing so, you are changing the traffic patterns and helping to lessen the amount of wear taking place to those areas of carpeting.  You’ll prevent premature wear by doing so and you’ll feel like you have a whole new living space each time!
