Temperatures continue cool down and we have to believe for the most part they are here to stay. Furnaces will kick on and fireplaces will begin to burn. Before that first fire, there are some fireplace safety tips and information to consider.
Fireplace Safety Tips
- Fireplaces are not intended to replace or be used as furnaces. Fireplaces should only be used up to 5 hours at a time
- Never leave a fire unattended while child are in the house
- Keep a nonflammable rug in front of the fireplace so that sparks won’t melt or damage your carpeting
- Always use fireplace tools to handle burning logs
- Have a certified chimney sweep inspect the fireplace once a year to ensure the chimney is working properly and no obstruction to the chimney has occurred

Fireplace Information
- Every chimney should have a chimney cap. A cap with wire-mesh sides covers the top of the chimney and keeps rain, animals, and debris from getting in the chimney. Replace or repair a cap that’s missing or damaged
- When burning a wood fire, choose dense wood that’s been split and stored in a dry place for at least six months
- Make sure to not overload your fireplace-a fire that’s too large or too hot can cause damage to your chimney
- Use a spark guard to prevent embers from shooting out of the fireplace
