Difference Between Carpet Spots and Stains

Carpet Spots

A spot is created when something has been dropped or spilled on the carpet.  When the item is dropped on the carpet, the substance doesn’t have the ability to permanently bond to the fiber or cause potential staining.  When left, a spot can look like a permanent stain, but with the proper cleaning it can be completely removed.

Examples of Spots:

  • Dust
  • Dirt
  • Most foods that do not contain artificial food coloring
Carpet Stains

A stain is formed when a substance is spilled that has the ability to permanently damage  the carpet fiber.  The item can permanently alter the color of the carpet fiber by adding color or removing color from the fibers in the carpet.

Examples of Stains:

  • Bleach
  • Hard surface cleaners
  • Some medicines
  • Materials with a higher or lower pH than the carpet dye itself
