A little vacuum TLC goes a long way toward keeping it running at peak performance. Use our seven cleaning and maintenance tips to keep your vacuum running efficiently and avoid any hefty repair costs.
1. Don’t Overfill the Cleaner Bag Empty bags when they’re about 1/3 to 1/2 full. This allows your vacuum to run more efficiently and provide a better clean. Check your bag frequently, especially if you notice that your vacuum is not cleaning as well as it usually does.
Remember that vacuum bags can be re-used at least a few times — just empty and re-attach!
2. Empty the Bin on Bagless Models Frequently If your vacuum does not use bags, ensure that you are emptying the bin or tray on a regular basis. Clean the bin with water or an all-purpose cleaner every time you empty it, as it’s difficult to get all the dust out if you only shake it.
3. Replace or Clean Filters Regularly On average, filters should be replaced every three months. Recommendations can vary greatly between models, so make sure to check the product manual for specific instructions. If the filters are washable, clean them by vacuuming them with another vacuum or by blowing out the dirt with an air hose outside.
4. Clean the Brush Roll The brush roll is the spinning brush that is located underneath the vacuum. String, lint and thread can often get caught in this roll and slow down its motion. These snags put more stress on the belt and engine and can make your vacuum wear out quicker than it should.
5. Check the Brush Attachments Inspect all attachments for wear and tear, and remove any debris that may be blocking airflow through the attachment. Wipe down or rinse off any food residue or other sticky substances, which can cause odors and affect the performance of the attachment.
6. Check the Belt Periodically check the belt on the bottom of your vacuum to ensure it’s correctly placed and not showing any significant signs of wear and tear.
7. Inspect the Vacuum Hose Check it for any cracks or air leaks. Although you may be able to temporarily repair the damage with duct tape, your hose should ideally be replaced for optimum efficiency.
Show your vacuum some love and it’ll keep your house clean for a while. A little time spent on maintenance can prevent expenses in the future.
