Spring is in the air – the sun is shining, the birds are chirping and the days are getting longer. Spring fever is setting in – literally!! It’s been noted that spring weather often attributes to an increase in asthma, allergies, and migraine flare ups. While outside temperature changes can attribute to the sneezing and head pressure, so can allergens in your home.
Studies have shown that indoor air can be 2 to 5 times MORE polluted than outside air. Most disposable filters remove about 10% of these pollutants allowing 90% to enter the air system, even during the construction of a new home. The pollutants contain dust, pollen, mold spores, animal dander and much more. These materials collect in the furnace, air conditioner and duct surfaces, just as they do on the furniture and floor surfaces. The furniture and floor are cleaned regularly but the duct surfaces are hidden from view and can only be reached by specialized duct cleaning equipment. These pollutants can migrate out into the room again, or become a food source for mold and bacteria, which can thrive in this dark comfortable environment from high humidity or moisture from the air conditioner or humidifiers. Biological growth can release mold spores or toxins into the air system.
You should consider having the air ducts in your home cleaned if:
1. There is substantial visible mold growth inside hard surface ducts or on other components of your heating and cooling system.
2. Ducts are infested with vermin (rodents or insects)
3. Ducts are clogged with excessing amounts of dust and debris and/or particles are actually released into the home from your supply registers.
If any of the conditions identified above exists, it usually suggests one or more underlying causes. Prior to any cleaning, retrofitting, or replacing of your ducts, the cause or causes must be corrected or else the problem will likely recur.
