DIY chair refresh

Sometimes as homeowners or renters, we get the design blues.  We feel the need to transform a room or item in our home.  One of the easiest ways to make a big change at a low cost is to recover your dining room chairs.  Update a set of dining chairs by recovering the cushions with a stylish new fabric with this simple DIY dining chair refresh!

What You Need:

  • upholstered seat dining chairs
  • 1/2 yard fabric per seat cushion
  • 1/2 yard lining per seat cushion
  • scissors
  • tape measure
  • staple gun
  • staples
  • screwdriver

DIY Chair Refresh

Select the chairs that you will be recovering- these can be ones you already have or a second hand find.  Follow the steps below:

1.  Remove seat cushion from chair frame and original fabric from the cushion.

2.  Cut the lining

Place the seat frame with cushion faced down on the lining. Trace about 3 inches from the frames edge to create your cut line

Attach the lining

Attach lining to frame using the staple gun.  Begin by stapling lining to frame at center point of each side and then at each corner- make sure to pull fabric tautly around frame.

After sides and corners are stapled in place, continue securing lining to frame.

Once you have the lining stapled in place, trim the excess fabric along the outer edge of your staple line.

Cut the fabric

Place the seat frame with cushion faced down on the fabric. Trace about 3 inches from the frames edge to create your cut line.

Carefully cut along your trace line.

Attach the fabric

Attach fabric to frame using the staple gun.  Begin by stapling fabric to frame at center point of each side and then at each corner- make sure to pull fabric tautly around frame.

After sides and corners are stapled in place, continue securing fabric to frame.

Pull fabric tightly around curved corners to eliminate tucks on top side of cushion.

Once you have the fabric stapled in place, trim the excess fabric along the outer edge of your staple line.

Reattach seat cushion to chair frame

After seat cushion is covered with new fabric, reattach to chair frame using original hardware.
