Saggy Cushions

Step 1 – Examine the Base of the Sofa

There may be various reasons why the sofa cushions are looking and feeling droopy. Turn over the sofa to check the state of its base. It could be that its wood frame is deteriorating in some places and thus requires fixing or changing in order to provide a more level foundation for the cushions. If this seems to be the case try to attach a piece of wood in the broken or rotting areas, or if the damage seems quite substantial replace altogether.

Step 2 – Stuffing sofa cushions

Now move onto checking the sofa cushions themselves. Slit open one side of the cushion cover with a seam cutter if it does not come with a zipper. Examine the foam inside the cushion covers. The foam may be worn out and needs renewing. Measure the length and width of the cushions with measuring tape, and outline the size and shape on the new foam pad. It is best to subtract a bit from the dimensions so as to make it fit better. Cut along the outline with a razor blade and insert into the cover.

Step 3 – Sewing up cushion covers to avoid the sagging look

You may also consider re-sewing the cushion covers with a sewing machine. A good method is by sewing up each bordering side slightly inwards of the original lines of stitching, just enough to be able to refit the cushion more smugly around the inside foam. This will help bring out a tighter fit instead of the unsightly droopy cushion.

By following these relatively simple steps you can give your sofa a better look, while making it more comfortable at a much lower cost.
